Texas Strong? Why Charlie Strong makes sense in Austin

Central Florida v Louisville

If Charlie Strong accepts the offer to become the next head football coach at the University of Texas, it will be the best most unexpected hire for Longhorn fans everywhere. Just about all of UT fans wanted Nick Saban to leave his dynasty in Tuscaloosa and come win multiple championships in Austin. That will not be the case. The scenario is set for itself. Just about every major sports network is reporting that Charlie Strong has been offered the head coaching position at Texas. Strong would be absolutely nuts to not take this job.

Strong has shown that he can win with limited resources and talent. Winning at Louisville is not remotely easy at all. During Strong’s tenure with the Cardinals, I have been impressed with how well Strong has recruited over the years. If Strong can recruit well at Louisville, just imagine how well he could recruit at Texas. Yes, I know Strong does not necessarily have any Texas ties, but honestly who cares? The man can recruit; he can do it in Austin without a doubt.

Strong finished 37-15 during his run at Louisville. Most of those fifteen losses came in the first two years of his rebuilding process. Strong resurrected a program that was in shackles and turned them quickly into a consistent contender. Just like ole Mack Brown who was at North Carolina before he came to Texas he was able to show that he is a consistent winner. Strong is the right hire for the Texas job because he is a young, passionate, hard-nosed defensive coach, who will have all of the resources and tools available to win efficiently. If you can win at Louisville, you can most certainly win at Texas. The biggest quick fix that Strong will need to instill will be on offense. The Longhorns defense had a solid run under Greg Robinson, it was the offense that was holding Texas back this year.

I do not expect Strong to win immediately at Texas, but I do not think that it will take longer than a couple years before they are back consistently in the top ten every year. I personally would love this hire because of what Charlie Strong brings to the table. Who knows what will happen, but either way UT just landed themselves an excellent football coach.
